Therapy in Marin County: When Your Life Looks Fine, But Doesn’t Feel That Way
Looking for therapy in Marin County? Learn why you may feel disconnected or “off” even when life looks fine—and how therapy can help.
My clinical approach relies heavily on understanding one's internal and external context. I've spent many years providing therapy to individuals, families, and facilitating process groups to people in Marin. Living in Marin County, it’s easy to feel like you’re surrounded by people who have things figured out.
There’s a strong emphasis on health, success, and self-awareness. From the outside, it can look like everyone is doing well—grounded, balanced, and put together.
But that doesn’t always reflect what’s happening internally.
Many people I work with describe a very different experience:
a quiet sense that something is off
difficulty trusting themselves
feeling disconnected, even in stable relationships
a persistent sense of not quite being enough
And one of the hardest parts is how invisible this can feel.
The Gap Between External Life and Internal Experience
In a place like Marin, it’s not uncommon to have:
a stable career
access to resources
a strong focus on wellness
But even with all of that, there can still be:
self-doubt
emotional disconnection
patterns in relationships that don’t make sense
This can create a confusing internal conflict:
“Why do I feel this way when everything looks fine?”
For many people, this connects to a deeper experience of
feeling like something is wrong with them—even when there’s no clear reason why.
Why This Happens
These experiences often have less to do with your current environment and more to do with earlier patterns that haven’t been fully understood.
Things like childhood emotional neglect—where your internal experience wasn’t consistently seen or responded to—can shape how you relate to yourself in lasting ways.
Over time, this can lead to:
chronic self-doubt
difficulty trusting your own reactions
a tendency to question your internal experience
Many people describe this as not trusting themselves, even in situations where their instincts are actually accurate.
Why It Can Feel More Isolating Here
In Marin County, there can be an unspoken expectation to be:
self-aware
emotionally regulated
“doing the work”
So when you’re struggling internally, it can feel like:
“Everyone else seems okay—why am I not?”
This can also lead to pulling back emotionally or going quiet in relationships—patterns that often resemble
emotional shutdown, where disconnecting feels safer than being fully present.
What Therapy Can Offer
Therapy can be a space where the focus isn’t on how things look—but on how they actually feel.
It’s a place to:
understand where these patterns come from
reconnect with your internal experience
develop a more grounded sense of self
This kind of work often goes beyond surface-level coping and into a deeper understanding of how your past continues to shape your present.
You’re Not the Only One Feeling This Way
One of the most powerful shifts for many people is realizing that they’re not alone in this.
That what they’re experiencing:
makes sense
has a history
and can be understood
